Krabi at a glance
It is very likely that the first picture you ever saw of Thailand was in fact Krabi.
The postcard-perfect turquoise waters, colorful little fish dancing in shallow reefs, and a dramatic limestone karst rising in the background… More than Thailand itself, that image is Krabi — a jewel of the Andaman Sea.
Krabi is where limestone cathedrals rise from turquoise seas, mangroves lace quiet lagoons, and rainforest waterfalls cool the inland heat. It’s also one of Thailand’s best balanced destinations: lively enough to be convenient, yet ring-fenced by protected areas that keep nature front and center.

A province of national parks (land & sea)
Krabi is unusually rich in protected areas.
Highlights include:
Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi Marine National Park : 388 km² of reefs, beaches and islands (including the Phi Phi archipelago), managed by Thailand’s Department of National Parks (DNP).
Mu Ko Lanta National Park : 25 islands at Krabi’s southern tip (Ko Rok, Ko Ngai, etc.), famed for clear water and healthy reefs.
Than Bok Khorani National Park : karst lagoons, caves and extensive mangrove forests around Ao Luek; a beautiful place to kayak under the canopy.
Khao Phanom Bencha National Park : Krabi’s inland rainforest with the tiered Huai To waterfalls and scenic jungle trails.

Conservation you can feel: closures, caps, and cleaner parks
Krabi’s most famous beach, Maya Bay, now follows a “protect to enjoy” model: it closes annually (1 Aug–30 Sep) for marine recovery, and when open operates with strict capacity limits (typically 375 people per round, timed visits through the day). This is run by the DNP to let sand, corals and sharks rebound after peak seasons.
Across Thailand’s 155 national parks, a ban on single-use plastics and foam has been in force since 2022—think no thin plastic bags, straws, cutlery or foam food boxes—reducing litter and wildlife harm inside protected areas.
Big-picture progress: in 2025 Thailand also banned imports of plastic waste, signalling a shift to cleaner oceans region-wide (important for Andaman destinations like Krabi).
Blue-carbon coasts: mangroves & seagrass that store CO₂
Krabi sits on an Andaman coastline where mangrove forests and seagrass meadows don’t just shelter juvenile fish and dugongs—they also lock away “blue carbon.” Recent assessments highlight Thailand’s west-coast seagrass value (notably Trang–Krabi waters), while national mangrove coverage is rebounding through conservation and community projects (including sites in Krabi province).

Beaches & the underwater show
From Railay’s powder sand and climbing walls to the Ko Rok reefs of Lanta National Park, Krabi’s seascape is made for low-impact days—snorkel above coral gardens, kayak mangrove channels, or pick a longtail to a pocket beach and arrive with nothing but reef-safe sunscreen. (When Maya Bay is closed, nearby coves still sparkle—and the closure helps keep them that way.)
Inland treasures (cool, green, quiet)
When the coast gets buzzy, head inland to Khao Phanom Bencha for birdsong and waterfall pools, or walk the forest boardwalks at Than Bok Khorani. These parks show Krabi’s other face: serene, shaded, and alive with rainforest sounds.

Why Krabi stands out right now
It’s one of the last big, well-connected destinations in Thailand where nature is actively protected at scale—four national parks in one province, annual marine rest periods, and national moves against plastic pollution. That combination—lively yet preserved—is rare, and it’s why travelers come back different.
